Under his eye
I've never really been a fan of "what if" scenario based shows or films and although I had seen and read some great things about the Handmaid's Tale, I was reluctant at first to give it a go. With a distinct lack of shows to watch, my partner and I (who was keen may I add) we embarked on June Osborne's grim story. Set in a dystopian future after the "Second American Civil War" where birth rates and fertility is at such a low, fertile women are herded together and separated from their families to become Handmaids for the totalitarian government of Gilead. Treated like animals, raped by their "owners" in a religious ceremony in the hope of baring children or shipped off to the "colonies" and even killed for disobedience and infractions, the Handmaid's tale is not a joyous watch that fills your heart with hope. However, the story of June and her survival is utterly gripping. I had the same feeling whilst watching this as I did watching Schindler's List. It truly is a remarkable series with some stand-out performances from Elisabeth Moss (June), Joseph Fiennes (Commander Fredrick “Fred” Waterford) and Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy Waterford) to name but a few. As a viewer, I was gripped, I was shocked, I was horrified but I was always left wanting more. There are some amazing scenes, some truly graphic and disturbing scenes but each of them memorable enough to leave you in shock. This is by no means a easy watch, just because of the content and how brilliantly written, directed and performed it is, but it is a must watch for it is a modern day classic.
