A timeless classic | |
The 20th Century Fox music plays, a text comes on screen which reads "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....." then, a fanfare of orchestral music bursts into the room, and the now iconic Star Wars logo and the yellow scrolling text appears on the screen......I'm forever hooked. Star Wars: A New Hope was the movie that changed how movies were made forever. Its place in popular culture cemented by the incredible imagination and vision of creator and director George Lucas. A space opera based on ancient myths and legends, a battle of good versus evil, a homage to the classic Saturday cowboy matinee movies of the 1940's and 50's. Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) is being hunted down by Darth Vader (David Prowse) and the Empire, who believe she has captured secret plans to a space station that can destroy entire planets. Leia is captured but not before hiding the plans in a droid, R2D2 (Kenny Baker) who along with his companion C3PO (Anthony Daniels) manage to escape to the nearest planet. They eventually end-up in the ownership of a local farm boy, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who discovers the message which was implanted in R2D2 of Leia seeking help from Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). Luke searches and finds Kenobi, but the Empire is hot on their trail. They seek the help of a smuggler, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his co-pilot Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) to try and rescue the Princess and deliver the plans safely to the rebel alliance. Released in 1977, it reignited the Sci-fi genre with its astonishing and ground-breaking visual effects. Its operatic orchestral soundtrack, composed by the great John Williams, provides a wonderful musical narrative to the onscreen events. Spaceships like the X-Wings, Tie Fighters and of course, the Millennium Falcon are still as cool today as they were back in 1977. The Star Wars galaxy and its inhabitants that Lucas created are literally out of this world, but they do not feel “farfetched”. Weapons such as the lightsabre are a believable and more elegant weapon of choice for the Jedi and is a genius inclusion which helped incorporate well-choreographed duels like those classic movies where Lucas drew inspiration from. What captivated me as a child still resonates with me today. The story of how hope can unite people (and aliens) of all backgrounds, to face-off and stand-up against evil tyranny, even when the odds are stacked against them. | |
